In February 2009, North Carolina author and U.S. Army veteran, Adam Perkins, travelled to South Carolina some 326 miles to do a five minute segment on WCSC CBS affiliate news channel 5.

He believed then as he does now that all Americans both past and present matter. His dillemna was simply this, getting Americans to be on one accord. With everyone seemingly pulling in different directions, he wasn’t sure how well his idea of unification would be accepted.

As he approached the city of Charleston, it became clear that no matter what, his mission would be to convince the citizens of Charleston, South Carolina that it was time for a change in how we celebrate the achievements of those who has made America what it is today and what it will be tomorrow-and that is exactly what he did when he presented a simple idea: Why not have an American History Month?

The spill was given, callers called-in. The final news poll revealed that over 70 percent of the people in Charleston, SC were in favor of an American History Month. As he would later say, “The good people of Charleston have spoken I believe for all of us.”

An American History Month would allow all Americans to celebrate the lives of those who gave so much to what has made this country great and for those who continue to make it so. The only difference, is that this time, we will celebrate it together-as one Nation. Not a month for one group versus another but a month for ALL AMERICANS.

Isn’t it time we come together?
